Only read this if you have read the book! There are spoilers.
If you haven’t already, check out my full review here, these are just a few comments that I want to add to the review…
I wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did; in fact, I didn’t really know what to expect at the end of the book. It was interesting because the characters didn’t even really have long-term goals. Sure, Warner wanted to survive the war, and Von Rumpel wanted to find the Sea of Flames, but after the war? Did they want to settle down, did they want to marry, etc.
In the end, I don’t think any of the characters got what they wanted. Warner didn’t survive the war. Von Rumpel didn’t obtain the Sea of Flames. Marie-Laure didn’t stay with her father. Poor Jutta lost the most important person in her life, and even Fredrick, a relatively minor character, lost his ability to appreciate birds; the love of his life. And although Madame Manec successfully aided the French in ailing the German, she did die.
Thank you for reading, I hope you loved this book as much as I did!
